Squirt - House League Rules

Good Sportsmanship and Enjoyment are the key objectives.

Ontario Minor Softball rules apply with the following exceptions:
  1. Players are requested to arrive no later than 6:10.  Game start times are 6:30 or 8:00pm.  If a team is not fielded within 15 minutes a forfeit is declared and an exhibition game is to be played.

  2. Games will be (5) innings.

  3. In case of rain, three innings may constitute a game.

  4. If a game is played at Lions Diamond #1 or #2 and there is a game scheduled to follow at 8:00 pm, there will be no new innings after 7:45. No new inning will start  90 minutes after the start of any game.

  5. All players will bat. When fielding a team, a maximum of ten players is allowed, 4 being fielders.

  6. A minimum of seven players is needed to make a team. If seven or eight constitute the team, the team must add one automatic out to the end of the batting line up. If late players join to make a team of 9 the automatic out is eliminated. The game will be forfeited if 6 or fewer players are present, but an exhibition game is encouraged.

  7. Coaches can only use players registered to their team with the following exceptions:

    1. If one team has 7 or 8 players and the opposing team of the game has more than 9 players, the coach of the greater than 9 player team may approach his/her team and allow one or more players to play for the team with 7 or 8 players. Both coaches have to agree.

    2. A coach may fill a team to a maximum of 9 players from a team in the same division and or from the next lower division( with parents approval) Team that is borrowing must notify opposing team.

    3. Borrowed players stay with the team for the complete game.  A player may not be borrowed if it causes him/her to miss his/her own game.  Borrowing of players does not cause a forfeit of a game.

  8. Except for the special circumstances of rule 8, coaches may only use registered players on their team. If a violation occurs, the game will be forfeited.

  9. Offensive players must wear a helmet with a chin strap at all times while on the field. Failure to do so will result in the team having an automatic out for each offence.  The league has provided face protection that must be worn by the pitcher.

  10. Safety bag is to be used only if it is a single. If the ball hit is a double or more the safety bag does not come into play.

  11. No lead offs or stealing until a pitched ball has crossed home plate. If violated, the runner will be called out. Stealing is limited to one base per play, after the player(s) advance one base the play is dead.

  12. JEWELRY - This rule is currently under review.  Discretion should be used by players, parents, coaches and umpires to restrict jewellery to small piercings such as studs that will not pose a hazard to that or any other player on the field.  Under no circumstances should rings, dangling necklaces or hanging earrings be worn by any player.

  13. Any open cuts must be properly bandaged or the player must be removed from the game.

  14. All players and designated coaches must wear a team hat and team shirt.

  15. Infield fly rule is not in effect.

  16. The batter is out:

    1. When the third strike is caught by the catcher before the ball touches the ground.

    2. When the batter has 3 strikes if there are less than 2 outs (0 or 1 out) and first base is occupied.

    3. Rule 8 from Softball Canada - Batter-Runner and Runner
      Section 1  The batter becomes a batter-runner:
      b. When the catcher fails to catch the third strike before the ball touches the ground; and

      1. There are less than two outs and first base is occupied; or

      2. There are two outs.

  17. Players can advance home on a passed ball, wild pitch or on a throw back to the pitcher

  20. Pitchers are not to pitch any more than 2 consecutive innings.

  21. Contact rule: Runners are instructed to slide or attempt to avoid making contact. A player who maliciously runs into another player will be declared out and ejected. This rule works both offensively and defensively.

  22. The league will try to schedule an umpire for home plate. If none are available, home team supplies the plate umpire and the visitors supply the base umpire.

  23. There is a five run mercy rule except in the last inning, which will be open.
